Animals are used for many purposes including research, pets, and food. Do you know what else they’re used for? Sports.
1. Camel Racing
2. Camel Wrestling
This sport was apparently discovered the first time two male camels decided to go at it over a female camel in heat. It’s popular in the Aegean region of Turkey, but is also practiced in other parts of the Middle East and South Asia.
3. Cane Toad Racing
4. Canine Freestyle Dancing
5. Cockroach Racing
6. Cow Racing
In South Australia they hold cow races every February. The cows are ridden by a jockey, but due to the difficulties in remaining mounted on the cows, each jockey has an ‘urger’ (assistant) to help them remain on board.
7. Dog Surfing
This sport includes training your dog to surf on surfboards, skimboards, bodyboards, windsurf boards, or to body surf. Competitions are held in different states in the U.S. with some of the larger competitions being the “Leows Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition,” the “Surf City Surf Dog Competition,” and “The Incredible Dog Challenge Dog Surfing Competition.” The photo above shows the Guinness World Record that was set in 2012 when 17 dogs were photographed surfing on one board.
8. Ferret Legging
Ferret legging is an endurance contest in which participants see how long they can keep a ferret in their pants. Contestants must not wear underwear and the ferrets must have teeth. A record was set in 2010 when Frank Bartlett and Christine Farnsworth managed to keep the ferrets in their pants for 5 hours and 30 minutes.
9. Goose Pulling
The sport in which you hang a goose by its legs from a pole or a rope, while a man on a horse at a full gallop would attempt to grab the goose by the neck and pull its head off. In previous centuries the goose would be alive, nowadays the goose is humanely put down by a veterinarian. Goose pulling is practiced in Belgium, Netherlands, and Germany.
10. Hamster Racing
This is probably the coolest animal sport on the list. Hamsters race down a 30 ft long straight course in either miniature racing vehicles or hamster balls. In 2006, MTV promoted “HamTrak ‘06”, professional hamster racers that featured hamster teams sponsored by The Sun, XFM, Pimp my Ride and many others. In 2007, Petco announced the return of their biannual hamster races, branding it “Petco Hamster Ball Derby.”
12. Lizard Racing Championships
13. Ostrich Racing
14. Pig Racing and Diving
15. Sheep Races
16. Snail Races
The race usually happens in a circular track where the snails start in the middle of the racing perimeter. The track is made up of a damp cloth on top of a flat surface and has a radius of 13 to 14 inches. The first snail to touch the outer circle of the ring is crowned the winner.
